Connected assistive technologies for aged care
The Umps Link products offer a stylish personal alarm and well being monitor. The Umps Link detects subtle changes in routine that indicate declines in wellbeing, before they result in an incident.
Trike has worked with Umps since 2020 to create a range of well being products for the aged care sector that enhance user experience, and meet the stringent requirements around critical safety communications.
“What struck me about Trike is how clear it is they have our best interests at heart. They have gone above and beyond what we expected from an industrial design partner.”

USER RESEARCH & UX MAPPING
—
Design led
technology choices
Early in the development process Trike analysed User Experience (UX) and technology choices. The focus of the work was to uncover how the product range should behave and what technologies should be used.
Collaborative Miro boards were developed to map out, test and refine product interactions for a variety of unique user scenarios. Consideration was given to factors such as the type of user, abilities of the user, end environment of use and available technologies.
This design lead approach helped to define how the product would behave and informed design briefs for electronics and software.
USER INSIGHTS
—
Addressing social stigma
Research showed a fear and social stigma associated with using personal alarm systems. The team endeavoured to create designs that users would be proud to use, fit in with their lifestyles and meet healthcare standards.
Through analysing standards, trends and user behaviours the team understood the opportunities in the program and were able to address social stigma.
design FORM
—
A unique approach
The products are designed to seamlessly fit into the users lives and provide comfort and assurance.
The Hub and Pendant provide clear user feedback and interaction via a thoughtful information hierarchy & sensory redundancy - providing visual, auditory and haptic feedback.
TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION
—
Complexity
under the hood
To meet the performance requirements several unique engineering subsystems were developed and tested. Subsystems included acoustics, lighting effects, large button function, fabric covering and IP testing.
