Deploying sophisticated X-ray technology into harsh environments
Southern Innovation develop cutting edge signal processing technology, with one of their main applications being X-ray transmission spectroscopy for real time material analysis. They have been working closely with Trike since 2016 with the aim of implementing their technology in various industrial settings.
DrillScan implements Southern Innovation’s X-ray technology into exploratory drilling. DrillScan analyses the pass through material in real time as sample material is extracted. This provides instantaneous feedback on samples which increases efficiency and allows more targeted exploration.
Our collaborative involvement spanned the process from project management, design and development of overall and critical engineering subsystems through to sourcing, assembly, product testing and manufacturing support.

Developing & verifying critical subsystems
To meet the harsh environmental and performance requirements several unique engineering subsystems were developed for DrillScan.
Subsystems included X-ray shielding & beam collimation, vibration isolation, thermal management and ingress protection.

Product & system testing
The DrillScan product required extensive testing to prove its performance.
This testing included functional and pre-compliance testing of prototypes (in-house), compliance and X-ray safety testing through accredited labs.
Following validation the prototype was shipped to the Pilbara for intensive in-field testing to verify performance in the extreme environmental conditions.
