Engineering safety & stability
Redflex, a global provider of traffic management solutions, wanted to develop an unmanned deployable speed camera for the US market.
Trike was engaged to develop a camera base unit which housed Redflex’s camera technology and could be quickly and safely deployed from a flat bed truck. The unit would support and power the camera technology for extended periods, across a range of roadside conditions.
Our team developed multiple visual concepts, full detailed design and engineering of the preferred concept and two full functioning prototypes for verification testing.
EXPLORATION & DESIGN LANGUAGE
—
Key principles & form
The design concepts for this product allowed Redflex to engage effectively with their key internal sales and marketing team.
Feedback guided the concept selection and lead to a more friendly form to the product with a visual language that communicated its safety function.
ENGINEERING & TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT
—
Robust & reliable
The instrument included some unique engineering challenges.
These included: battery and fuel cell power alternatives (creating a product mass > 1 tonne), vandal proofing for abusive environments, auto levelling of the unit on uneven ground and a retractable mast to deploy the camera system 3.8m above the ground.
